Why We Celebrate Arts & Cultural Community Leaders

Writer: Theresa LiebermanTheresa Lieberman

The arts are more than just performances, exhibitions, or creative expressions—they are the heartbeat of a vibrant community. They tell our stories, shape our identities, and bring people together in ways that transcend words. But behind every thriving arts scene, there are dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to support, advocate, and create opportunities for artists and audiences alike.

Arts VoCo Season of the Arts will celebrate these cultural champions that deserve recognition. Their dedication fuels artistic innovation, strengthens cultural institutions, and ensures that creativity continues to flourish for future generations. That’s why we take the time to celebrate arts and cultural community leaders—because their contributions make our world richer, more inspiring, and more connected.

The Impact of Arts Leaders

Arts and cultural leaders take on many roles—they are artists, educators, administrators, philanthropists, and visionaries. They build programs that nurture talent, advocate for funding and resources, and cultivate spaces where creativity thrives. Their impact extends far beyond the arts world; they contribute to economic development, enhance tourism, and foster inclusivity within our communities.

Recognizing and celebrating these individuals is not just a gesture of gratitude—it’s an investment in the future of the arts. By shining a light on their efforts, we inspire others to support, participate in, and champion the arts in their own ways.

Honoring Arts & Culture Leaders

One way we celebrate these leaders is through the Arts VoCo Gala, the inaugural annual event dedicated to recognizing those who have significantly contributed to the cultural fabric of our community. This year, we are honored to recognize the following recipients:

  • Cici Brown Legacy Award

  • Thays Franca Artist of Distinction

  • Atlantic Center for the Arts Outstanding Art & Cultural Organization

  • Outstanding Student & Educator Awards in Visual and Performing Arts (to be announced)

Last night, at the annual VCCA Award Dinner, we proudly honored Lloyd Bowers with the prestigious Tippen Davidson Award, recognizing his unwavering dedication to the arts. We also celebrated Julia Truilo, who received the Brady-Coolidge Award for her incredible contributions to our cultural landscape.

Both of these esteemed honorees will join the ranks of Arts VoCo Award Recipients at the Arts VoCo Gala on April 1. This is your opportunity to be part of a night that acknowledges the heart and soul of our arts community.
